Joining Syklo’s team as a bold pioneer
Suomen Energiamurske’s Hyvinkää circular economy hub became part of Syklo in January 2024, and Heikki Lappalainen is the new head of unit, responsible for its production and development. Lappalainen, who has always been interested in environmental issues, will also oversee Finland’s largest plastics recycling plant, planned to be built in Hyvinkää.
“I am excited to be part of such an important initiative, advancing a meaningful and growing circular economy. Our team has a genuine spirit of getting things done.”
This is how the new head of unit of the Hyvinkää circular economy hub reflects on his experience after his first few months in the role. Lappalainen brings solid expertise to the management and development of the unit, having previously overseen operations at metal and industrial group Sandvik’s factory in Lahti, and played a role in commissioning the Ball Beverage Packaging can factory in Mäntsälä.
“In practice, the Mäntsälä project started with an empty production facility, which we transformed into a productive and safe mega factory, now employing over 100 people. It has helped us understand what we are now doing at Syklo.”
The circular economy is an interesting new field for Lappalainen, but its roots trace back to earlier stages in his life. While studying for a Master of Science in Materials Engineering, he selected environmental protection as his minor.
“The environment and nature have always been important to me. In my new role, I was struck by the intriguing job description that perfectly aligned with the work I aspire to do now. A major advantage was Syklo’s strong commitment to investing in the circular economy and its vision for future opportunities, such as the future plastics recycling plant.”
Involved in something innovative and good
Heikki Lappalainen’s work at Syklo has lived up to his expectations, and he expresses being in high spirits. A head of unit’s job description is extensive and diverse.
“Together with a small team, we are currently managing the recycling operations at the Hyvinkää circular economy hub. I’m involved in a wide range of tasks, starting from levelling. We have a great small team here and there will be many more of us Sykloists in the future.”
The role of head of unit will become even more varied in the future as operations at the plastics recycling plant commence. Upcoming tasks include recruiting personnel, providing training, and starting up the recycling plant with the best technology on the market, Lappalainen shares.
“Looking ahead, I have already had the opportunity to thoroughly familiarise myself with the recycling operations. It will be a good challenge, and I have learned a lot.”
For Heikki Lappalainen, the circular economy means maximising the utility of materials by recycling them or increasing their added value. By raising the recycling rate, we can reduce both emissions and waste.
“I am eager to contribute to something innovative and good, and I’m thrilled to be part of Syklo’s expanding family. Syklo is clearly committed to the future and has the courage to be a bold pioneer. This allows me to actively contribute to sustainable development.”
The Hyvinkää plastics recycling plant is scheduled for completion in 2025. It is estimated to increase Finland’s plastics recycling capacity by up to 50%.
