Syklo expands operations at Oulu waste sorting plant

The Regional State Administrative Agency for Northern Finland has granted the circular economy company Syklo an expanded environmental permit for its sorting facility in Oulu. Previously, Syklo handled unsorted construction and demolition waste, as well as commercial and industrial waste, in Oulu under the Kiertokaari environmental permit. With this decision, an increasing proportion of waste materials will be returned to circulation, rather than being used for energy production.

Oulu’s Rusko waste management site continues to grow as one of the most significant circular economy hubs in Northern Finland. The recent environmental permit decision enables the development of the facility’s operations to better align with the requirements of modern circular economy practices.

New waste fractions become resources

The new environmental permit allows the sorting facility to process and receive up to 200,000 tons of waste per year, double the amount permitted under the previous license. Additionally, the permit covers new waste fractions, such as treated wood, and enables the expansion of storage and processing operations.

“The decision supports Syklo’s vision, where waste is not a problem but a resource. With the expanded environmental permit, we can implement more advanced technologies that improve sorting accuracy and enhance the recovery of recyclable materials. This is a significant step toward reducing energy incineration and advancing the circular economy,” says Head of Operations Mikko Kokkonen.

More efficient circular economy, sustainably and safely

Syklo adheres to strict environmental protection regulations to ensure its operations cause minimal harm to the environment and surrounding communities. Harmful substances generated during processing are kept out of nature through sealed platforms and stormwater management systems.

Previously, Syklo processed waste in Oulu under Kiertokaari’s environmental permit. The new permit conditions replace the previous decisions. Syklo regularly reports measurement results to the authorities and anticipates potential risks in advance.

“Syklo is one of Finland’s largest commercial waste material receivers. The granted environmental permit is a crucial prerequisite for advancing sustainable waste management solutions in Oulu and Northern Finland. It also marks a significant step forward in Syklo’s broader growth strategy. We are excited about the forthcoming opportunities,” says Kokkonen.
